In September 1910, the Bath Pavilion opened as the Somerset County Skating Rink on North Parade Road. It was built on land that was part of the Bathwick Estate. During World War I, the building was used for the assembly of airplane parts. After an unsuccessful attempt to sell the Bathwick Estate in 1921, the Recreation Ground was purchased by leaseholders, and the skating rink remained occupied by “Aircraft Limited” until 1930.
The building was purchased by the local City Council and renamed the Pavilion. Reopening as a music concert hall in November 1930.
In the 1960s, the Bath Pavilion hosted some of the biggest names in rock and roll such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin.
“This unique and charming iconic venue, which is historic, chic, yet simple with understated elegance and the perfect atmosphere to listen to the magnificent music of PINK FLOYD, played by one of the very best tribute bands in the UK, the Bath Pavilion is probably the best music venue that you will find in Bath.”
Bath Pavilion has a large auditorium, raised stage, large entrance lobby with a licensed bar and café area.
It may sound bizarre, but in 2019 this is something that become a reality for us. A festival released our very own ale to 10,000 people…
We were booked to headline one of the two main stages at the World’s Biggest and Best Tribute band festival in Leicestershire; Glastonbudget. The organisers decided to celebrate the event by asking a local brewery to create an IPA called ‘Navigation, Tropical Pale Ale’, because they considered us ‘a band worthy of an ale’. It was such an honour. The shield on the pumps and the beer mats were printed with a special design featuring the classic Pink Floyd rainbow spectrum.
Of course, we all had to sample this fine ale, and we agreed that it was indeed a worthy ale, refreshing and top-class; just like us ! Our name has changed now, and due to trademark laws, we have blanked out part of the old name.
This is FLOYD were the first band to play two public performances inside the caves of Kents Cavern in Torquay. Kents Cavern is one of the most important Prehistoric Stone Age sites in Europe. It has extensive cave systems made from Devonian Limestone. Britain’s oldest human bone was discovered there. The Caves are estimated to be over 400 million years old and there are many large stalagmites and stalactites.
The band played two performances inside the caves on 2nd July 2011. Both shows were sell-outs. People who attended still talk about ‘the spectacular Pink Floyd gig underground’ and how ‘mesmerising and atmospheric’ it was.
The Logistics
Logistically, it was a nightmare trundling all the equipment along the uneven pathways. Down to the only reasonably flat area suitable for a make-shift stage. The ground was wet and there were constant drips from the roof that made it interesting. The electrics and equipment had to be covered with plastic sheeting to avoid being electrocuted. Health & Safety at the venue for a Rock Band probably hadn’t been risk assessed then. The worst part was taking all the equipment out again at the end of the second show and loading the vans.
The audiences were standing at the top of a gentle slope looking down on the performers. We did notice one mad person attempting to climb up one of the rocky walls to get a better view, even though the slope gave him a fairly good vantage point. Both performances were rapturously received. The venue received countless excellent feedback. It was a truly amazing night showcasing the wonderful music of Pink Floyd. The caves were a perfect place to give such a performance and we thanked Kents Cavern for allowing us to perform there.
This is FLOYD have performed seven times since July 2016 in The Rum Store at Carnglaze Caverns in Cornwall. The Cavern features three man-made caves that were part of a slate quarry. The largest of the caves being The Rum Store. This was used by the Royal Navy for storing all its Rum for the sailors. In 2001 a stage was erected with an ample power supply suitable for seated events to be held inside the large expanse. It became an unusual concert venue. Many famous groups have performed there over the years including Fish, Fairport Convention and Marillion. Although This is FLOYD have probably sold out the most shows. We even played two back-to-back nights in 2023 and again in 2024; both were sell-outs on each evening. This will be repeated in our two shows this October 2025 for sure.
The Tour
Carnglaze itself is set amongst 8 acres of ancient woodland and it takes about 30 minutes to walk around the caves and another 20 minutes for the woodland walk. The Caverns are at a constant 10°C underground, so a jumper and sensible footwear are recommended. And it drips from the ceiling after heavy rain a few days before. It takes a while to percolate down from above.
Playing here
Our shows in the caves at Carnglaze hold a special place in our hearts as we love playing here. We are always welcomed by the owners and they even let us use part of their house for our ‘Green Rooms’. On stage, it’s just so magical. And the sound acoustics are second-to-none. Our six professional quality lasers complement the atmosphere created by the caves. We’ve had many people say that it’s the best experience they’ve ever had at a musical show. Can you imagine listening to Comfortably Numb inside a cave, deep underground . . .
Playing in front of 30,000 people is an amazing experience for anyone. This is FLOYD were asked to perform on the main stage at Catton Hall & Park in Derbyshire.
Home of the famous Bloodstock Festival
Catton Hall has hosted the Bloodstock open-air Heavy Metal Music Festival since 2005. The other very famous event held at Catton is the Derbyshire Sausage & Cider Festival that features many of the UK’s top tribute bands, including This is FLOYD who performed there in 2022. Follow this link to find out more about Catton Hall.
Performing to a lot of people is something that any tribute band aspires to
This is FLOYD have also performed at the legendary Glastonbudget Festival, billed as the World’s biggest & best Tribute Festival. We have played at Glastonbudget seven times and headlined each of the main stages twice. Our band were also found playing in front of 30,000 people when we headlined on the huge main stage at Glastonbudget in 2017.
Poole Harbour Music Festival
Another large festival site where we were invited to play recently. This was another Headline performance closing out the festival. We were lucky to have plenty of sunshine during the day and this resulted in another large audience who appreciated the Pink Floyd songs with enthusiasm.
We’ve been invited back to Headline at Glastonbudget this year AND also to the highly prestigious ULTIMATE TRIBUTE FESTIVAL in Poole.
